Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- The Purdue Extension has reported the effects of the drought on food prices will be long felt to the tune of nearly 3 1/2% in 2013 and possibly higher.
Vickie Hadley with the Purdue Extension says beef, dairy and pork products will become more expensive in the long-term as demand outweighs supply.
"There are farmers who are already culling their herds and so they're getting rid of beef, which means that for the short terms there's going to be lots of beef available because they're taking them to the slaughter but give us six months down the road, nine months down the road, we're not going to have the animals there."
Hadley says preserving meats in the short term could go a long way towards saving a few bucks come fall and winter.
