Auburn, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - Being ready, when disaster strikes, is something authorities in northeast Indiana are always focused on. Tuesday the local emergency management team was training in Auburn.
In the wake of the deadly explosions at the Boston Marathon Monday we wanted to know if the tragedy was changing anything for our emergency management team. But the Allen County Emergency Management Director says regular training by the group is now the norm.
"This is what we do now, this is the new normal, so what you see behind us today, the incident management team, is something the state of Indiana has been developing for the last few years,” said Bernie Beier, Director, Allen County Office of Homeland Security.
District three of the Indiana Emergency Management Agency includes 11 counties in the northeast area of the state.
The team is doing training exercises Tuesday and Wednesday in Auburn. They’re setting up a station that would be used by first responders during a disaster.
In addition to hands-on training the group meets monthly to discuss the plans they have in place.
“It's ongoing, the word is process, the training or the exercise, the writing the plans, all of that is part of our preparedness process, it's very cyclical and we always have to be doing something. We may change what we focus on based on past events," said Beier.
Part of their training involves inviting local first responder agencies to join in their exercises. Beier describes emergency management planning as always being a team effort.
