FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Administrators at Fort Wayne Community Schools say they're standing by their comments six months ago that the I-STEP+ scores from this spring will be discounted.
Now that the results have been released, district-wide, students improved their scores by a little more than a half-percent. But Superintendent Wendy Robinson says it doesn't matter.
Students took the I-STEP test last spring amid state-wide computer glitches, and local administrators had concerns about results back then.
Now that the school year has been underway for about a month, Fort Wayne Community is not planning to do anything with these results, since they're so old, and the district claims, the results are so corrupt.
“It's October. How many more months am I going to spend trying to figure out what happened in the event in April, when I already know the standards I'm supposed to be teaching. We already have our frequent assessments, and if we know I'm going to be held accountable for I-STEP again, then I better be making certain that the kids and the teachers, first of all, are over what happened last time. Because it was very traumatic for a large number of students in our district,” Robinson says.
Students will take the I-STEP again this year, but as for this past spring's results?
“The I-STEP test, as always, was an event six months ago. Serious disruptions, so the state scores are the state scores, and any questions about how they were determined, you have to ask the state,” Robinson says.
Fort Wayne Community had another computer issue during I-STEP testing when there weren't enough computers for the sixth graders to take the test online.
The district got special permission from the state for those students to take the test on paper.
Interestingly enough, that was the only grade that continued the same improvement pattern as in the last three years in scores.
