FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A visitation is being held from 5- 7 pm Friday night for a Fort Wayne mother who died in a house fire on New Year’s Eve day after her teenage son couldn't reach her.

43-year-old Kelly Tomasi died at the hospital after firefighters fought flames at her home in the 2500 block of Wells Street.

Her 16-year-old son Spencer Tomasi is a hero, though he doesn't feel like one.

Spencer broke out a window and escaped the house, then pulled his 10-year-old sister Zoe to safety.

He then went to the front door and heard his mother screaming for help.

He broke another window, unlocked the door and went in to try and save his mom but was severely burned when he couldn't reach her.

Fire crews tried to save Kelly Tomasi, but the fire was just too intense.

A memorial service for Kelly is being held from 5- 7 pm Friday night at the North Side Missionary Church on Lillian Avenue. Even in this horrific time, the family has asked Indiana’s NewsCenter to give a message of thanks to the Fort Wayne Firefighters for all they did to help.

Fort Wayne Assistant Fire Chief Amy Biggs says, “We certainly strive to have no loss of life at any point in time, and we sympathize with their loss, and hopefully through these type of efforts, can prevent anything from happening in the future."

On Saturday, January 29th, there will be a fundraiser for the children put on by the Mimi Burns Band.

It will be held at 7 pm at C2G Music Hall at 323 west Baker Street.
