Allen County, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A nasty traffic crash at U.S. 30 and Kroemer Road last week will prompt an investigation to see if safety changes need to be made at the intersection.
A little girl died in the incident, and five other people were hurt.
There is a pretty clear picture of what happened, but why, that's still a mystery.
A test of a semi truck driver's blood alcohol level will be analyzed, to see if he might have been impaired at the time, which is standard procedure in such a fatal mishap.
The semi was westbound on 30 Friday afternoon, and rammed into a line of vehicles waiting for a green light at Kroemer Road.
It's not clear why he didn't slow.
The Allen County Coroner’s office has now confirmed that Abigail Marie Little of Albion, who was about to turn five years old, died from the crash.
She was riding in a van that took a direct hit.
Shana Haiflich, who has lived close to the intersection for a year and a half, heard the crash Friday.
An agency that tracks crashes in Northeast Indiana reports 13 accidents happened at that intersection between 2009 and 2011.
There were two injuries in those mishaps, with no fatalities.
Haiflich says the crossing is a danger.
Shana Haiflich/Lives Near Crash Scene: " We hear accidents quite often. They usually sound like a loud boom inside of our house. I think it's mostly that people don't see the light right away, most of the semis don't have time to slow down."
Mary Foster/INDOT: " It's a matter of looking at what's there, in the terms of signage, pavement markings, signals, to see if anything needs to be added or changed."
The location’s crash history will also be reviewed in the traffic study by INDOT.
The Northeast Regional Coordinating Council, that reviews crashes, says from the volume of traffic and frequency of crashes, the corresponding crash rate is low.
But that doesn't mean changes won't take place.
