FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – General Motors is cutting back on production at the Fort Wayne plant as the automaker deals with an over-abundance of full-size pickup trucks.

Saturday shifts at the plant have been canceled and a scheduled temporary shutdown will be extended from the last week of December through the first week of January.

Reports say GM wants to reduce its supply of Silverado and Sierra trucks after sales slowed down in the spring.

However, a few Saturday shifts will be added at the Flint, Michigan plant this fall.

UPDATE 08/19:

Today, the Fort Wayne Assembly Plant's Assistant Manager and Plant's Communications Manager both said that no schedule shift has been confirmed yet.

They would not comment any further on the scheduling matter.

Additionally, they would not comment about the overall future of the plant as Flint, Michigan is preparing production of a new line of GM trucks that have some folks in Fort Wayne uncertain about GM's future in Allen County.

Finally today, the UAW Local 2209 at the Fort Wayne Assembly plant donated more than $31,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The UAW Local 2209 is sponsoring five children. Four of those children will be at tonight's Fort Wayne TinCaps game to throw out the first pitch.

The plant will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary.
