FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Fort Wayne could soon see a new charter school on the southeast side.

The Fort Wayne Urban League submitted a proposal to the state charter board for a new school in the East Allen County district... specifically in the Village area.

Officials say it would eventually be a K-12 school offering a longer school year and longer days than most other schools.

Teachers would also be instructed to stress the importance of community service.

Jamie Garwood, Director of Development and Programming says, “We want it to be a learning opportunity for our public school partners that they can be part of the school in terms of seeing what works and what doesn't work at the school and take that and replicate that in their own schools.”

State officials will notify the Urban League on December 20th if the charter school is approved.

The school would then open next fall accepting about 375 students the first year.
