FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – A disturbing trend hitting Fort Wayne’s Craigslist page is the sale of pets – for free. And the Allen County SPCA says it’s a major problem.

Not only is the use of sites like Craigslist to give away animals for free illegal, it puts the animal's future in jeopardy.

The SPCA asks that rather than giving your pet away to a stranger, do your research on rescue shelters or family members who may be able to take the animal.

It could be the difference of life and death.

"When you are giving your family pet away for free, you really don't know what the ultimate end story might be for that animal,” says the Director of the Allen County SPCA Jessica Henry. “So if you love your family pet, do everything you can to keep that pet in your home, or among your family and friends. When that's not an option for you, reach out to a shelter or a rescue organization and see if we can help."

The SPCA offers services like free pet food every Thursday and training tips for unruly animals to help owners in need. You can call them at 260-744-0454 for more help.

If giving up your pet truly is your only option, the SPCA will gladly work with you to ensure the best possible future for your pet.
