FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - Whether it is related to the frigid cold temperatures or the time of year, February is typically a slow time for donations at the Mustard Seed Furniture Bank.
This year is no different.
The Mustard Seed has provided second-hand home furnishings to families coping with catastrophic circumstances. But now their supplies are running low.
As executive director Suzie Jordan explains, being stuck inside during this deep freeze is the perfect time to reassess your stuff.
"It is so cold, people don't want to go outside but it's a great time to go through your linen cupboard or maybe go through your kitchen and perk it up for yourself but then again also give that back as a donation to the Mustard Seed. So it's a win-win situation. You get a cleaner house, you get your spring cleaning done earlier but you also have that tax deduction as well."
Some of the things Mustard Seed needs most right now include full, queen, and king-sized blankets as well as kitchen and bath towels. Other goods include sets of kitchen pots and pans along with cookie sheets.
When it comes to bigger furniture pieces there is a major shortage of dressers, shelving units and lamps as well as sofas and living room chairs.
Any item being donated must be in working order and free of rips, tears, stains, cigarette burns and animal hair. Items that cannot be accepted include (but are not limited to) baby items, holiday items, entertainment electronics and exercise equipment as well as major appliances, desks, and sleeper sofas.
Drop-offs are accepted at 3636 Illinois Road Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. Arrangements can be made for free pick-up of larger pieces of furniture.
Since opening its doors in 2002, Mustard Seed has provided everything from furniture to bedding to towels and blankets to more than 8,600 adults and 10,000 children in Allen and surrounding counties.
