INDIANAPOLIS (21Alive) - A high school football game Friday night between South Side High School and Indianapolis Arsenal Tech High School was called after a fight between players, coaches and fans broke out.
With just over a minute left in the third quarter, and Tech up 24-6, things became a little chippy between players after a tackle.
That quickly escalated into players and coaches from both teams coming onto the field, starting a melee. The game was called off, and Tech given credit for the win.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department was called to the scene to help school officers who were already on hand for the game and calm was quickly restored.
“The IHSAA is investigating the situation," the Indiana High School Athletic Association says in a statement released Saturday. "We will meet with the schools soon and hope to have a decision on action by the middle of the week.”
Arsenal Tech head coach Emil Ekiyor tells WTHR-TV in Indianpolis that the Tech assistant coach who threw a punch at a South Side assistant coach is a volunteer coach, and will be suspended for the remainder of the season.
"As an educational institution, we are always dismayed when adults don't provide proper leadership when working with students," Fort Wayne Community Schools superintendent Wendy Robinson, Ed.D., said Monday in a statement. "We take such situations seriously, and our intent is to assist in getting this resolved. I commend those South Side athletes who attempted to remove themselves from what quickly turned into a volatile situation. We will investigate to determine what action, if any, is necessary in dealing with our adults and students, and we will fully cooperate with the IHSAA investigation. We will also find a way to use this situation as a life lesson and move on."
Indianapolis Public Schools says no one was injured in the brawl, and that police did not arrest anyone.
