IHSAA Proposal Could Change Girls Basketball Season

March 28, 2014 Updated Mar 28, 2014 at 6:03 PM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS (21Alive) - An overlap of the IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals and boys basketball sectional finals could soon be eliminated with legislation before the IHSAA Board of Directors.

IHSAA commissioner Bobby Cox introduced a proposal Friday that would move the start of girls basketball season up one week.

The move would separate the girls state finals and boys sectional finals from being played the same Saturday.

Traditionally, schools with a girls team in the state championship and a boys team in a sectional championship move the the Saturday final to the following Monday night.

If passed, the girls state finals would be played while boys teams are still in the regular season starting in the 2015-16 school year.

Cox introduced the proposal on behalf of the principals from the Northern Lakes Conference, which includes Warsaw Community and Wawasee high schools.

The IHSAA Board of Directors is expected to make a decision at a May 5 meeting.
