UNDATED (www.incnow.tv) – Indiana Governor Mike Pence says defining the state's idea of marriage is something he plans to bring up in the next legislative session.

Just last month, the Supreme Court ruled that legally married same-sex couples are entitled to the federal benefits that heterosexual married couples receive.

The court also ruled that proposition eight had no grounds to prohibit same-sex marriage in California. But, these rulings don't call for legal gay marriage across the country leaving state governments to dictate some of their own laws.

Pence says he plans to present a referendum to citizens about changing Indiana’s constitution.

"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, and I believe the people of Indiana rather than the courts should make that decision. And I think that if given the opportunity, I think the people of Indiana will reaffirm our commitment to the importance of marriage,” said Gov. Pence.

These Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage will also have an impact on retirement plans and employee benefits, including healthcare benefits.

President Barack Obama recently made a change to the Affordable Care Act that would push back employee-mandated healthcare by a year.

Congressman Marlin Stutzman says it’s just another sign on why the law should be repealed.

"As this starts to unfold, we're starting to see the impact it has on Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS). We're starting to see the impact it has on other schools around the state and around the country, that people are now being put in a position where they're working 29 hours and they're going to have to supplement their income to have full-time work,” said Stutzman.

Stutzman believes healthcare and same-sex marriage will be just a couple of the many topics of discussion in congress when he returns to Washington.
