Harlan Man Sentenced for Diverting Wastewater Around Water Meter

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -A Harlan man will spend no time in jail for diverting wastewater around a Fort Wayne meter, a move that cost the city tens of thousands of dollars.

After pleading guilty in December to corrupt business influence, a judge suspended a four-year prison sentence for 61-year-old James Perrin of Harlan.

Perrin had already repaid the city $150,000 in restitution.

The plea deal called for a theft charge to be dropped.

Perrin admitted he didn't want the city to bill the Maysville District for the wastewater treatment services and used a bypass valve so the district wouldn't be charged.

He will serve two years on probation and perform 80-hours of community service.
