FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Passenger rail is making a return to the Summit City this weekend.

On October 26 and 27 the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is taking passengers on board the steam locomotive no. 765 from Fort Wayne to West Lafayette. Tickets for the trips sold out less than two hours after they went on sale.

The popularity of this event is exciting for the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association. The group has been working for years to bring passenger rail back to Fort Wayne.

"We hope in the future we can see train travel come back to Fort Wayne, and back to the Midwest with links to Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, and to really bring passenger rail service back so people can come down to this beautiful old train station and actually get on a train and travel," said Councilman Geoff Paddock, (D) 5th district.

Paddock says, right now, the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association is working to raise funds for an environmental study. It's a step that is a must for them to move forward.

Paddock says, in the next few weeks, the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association will be asking Fort Wayne City Council to use $200,000 from the Legacy Fund for the project. They'll also seek money from the other cities, that fall along this proposed rail system, to help fund this study.
