LEESBURG, Ind. (21Alive) -- A man is behind bars after an attempted burglary was thwarted by some quick-thinking homeowners.

Police were called to 6008 North, Old State Road around 10:18 a.m. after being advised of a burglary in progress. Investigators later determined that a man entered the residence by breaking a window, startling a woman in the house who confronted the burglar.

The woman then got her son as the burglar went back out his car. The son retrieved a .45 caliber handgun and went out to confront the burglar, who was coming back towards the house with a claw hammer. The burglar quickly retreated back to his car and tried to run over the victim's son but not before the son shot the car several times as it sped away.

The burglar was seen driving away from the scene as police were responding to the call and was quickly apprehended without incident. He was identified as 43-year-old Mack Samuel Stokes of Warsaw. Stoke's car he was driving was found to not be his and he did not have permission from the owner to be driving it.
