FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Around the world and in Fort Wayne this Valentine's Day, groups met to boogie down to bring awareness to a devastating statistic.

The One Billion Rising movement is named for the estimated one billion women around the world who've been the victims of sexual, physical, emotional or mental violence.

The group says that amounts to one in three women who will experience that kind of violence in her lifetime.

And to bring that violence out of the shadows and into the forefront of people's minds, One Billion Rising organized groups of people around the world to share in a universal language -- dance.

The people in the stands at Parkview Field were led by more than a dozen women and the TinCaps' Bad Apple Dancers in several routines, all an effort to help anyone hurt by violence know she is not alone.

"It's important because violence against women is a real thing, and I don't think people realize that it's one out of three people. And I have very close friends that it has affected, and so it's important for me to be able to stand up with them today," says event attendee Courtney Tritch.

"It gives everybody hope. Those survivors and those victims, when they see everybody come together, people who may not have experienced it themselves, they feel hope and they feel empowered that people care to stop this," says event attendee Stephanie Feldman.

The money collected at the event will be given to the partnering agencies like the YWCA and others in our community who will in turn provide more services to women who've been abused, raped or bullied.
