Should Indiana have a statewide smoking ban?
INDIANAPOLIS (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A statewide ban on smoking appears to have its best shot at being okayed by the General Assembly after four successive failed attempts.
State Representative Charlie Brown from Gary says he will offer a bill in January that would prohibit public smoking without an exemption for any establishment.
Even the principal opponents concede it's just a matter of time before such a measure becomes law.
New Haven’s State Rep. Phyllis Pond says, “There's a lot of people for it, a lot of people against it, so we have a lot of tobacco growers in the southern part of the state, but some of those didn't get returned to office, so we'll see what happens. We've got a lot more important things to talk about than that."
Governor Daniels prefers to see local governments set their own smoking guidelines, but he says he would sign a statewide ban if it comes to his desk.
