FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – In the wake of tensions in the Middle East and the worry of oil supplies taking a drastic hit across the world, the price of gasoline is rising.
Diesel fuel prices have been rising as well, and they’re putting a strain on truck drivers across the country. To fill one of those big rigs it can cost drivers at least $400 per fill-up. Many today in Fort Wayne were paying closer to $500. Drivers Indiana’s NewsCenter talked to say a tank of gas in the western part of the country can cost a driver $600.
Cory Hughes, whose rig hauls Amish made cabinets, says, “It hits them kind of hard. Especially the independent drivers have a real tough time with the way the things are today but we're hoping that they go down as always.”
Hughes and other drivers say there is a huge dependence on the trucking industry for shipping in the U.S. They say higher diesel prices won’t stop them from shipping goods, but it could have a greater influence on independent drivers.
