FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - A former cross country state champion competing at the Boston Marathon is safe after finishing near where explosions rocked the race Monday afternoon.

Alissa McKaig is one of a host of runners from Northeast Indiana taking part in one of the nation's top sporting events.

"I was a block away walking to lunch with my parents," McKaig sent in a text to 21Alive. "There were two huge booms, there was confusion everywhere, and the FBI was walking pass a bunch of ambulances."

McKaig limited her correspondence after that, when law enforcement officials requested people in the Boston area not use cell phones in fear of triggering more explosions.

McKaig had already finished the marathon, placing 27th among women.

McKaig won the 2003 IHSAA Girls Cross Country State Championship in her senior year at Concordia Lutheran High School. She also won the Mental Attitude Award for girls cross country that year.

McKaig would go on to run for Michigan State University, Baylor University and Indiana Tech. While at Tech, she would win NAIA National Championships in the women's 5,000m and 10,000m runs.
