MARION, Ind. (21Alive) – The city of Marion is still picking up the pieces from Sunday’s storm that left thousands without power.
It's been three days since an EF-2 tornado touched down and straight line winds blew through Marion.
"There's been a lot of devastation,” said Scott Hartley, the owner of Summit Village Mobile Home Community. “We had a house flip over on top of another house."
"People have started arriving, and we have more people arriving everyday," said Mark Slusher with the American Red Cross.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana Michigan Power reported nearly 1,600 people in Grant County are still without power leaving many to seek shelter at Sunnycrest Baptist Church.
"The immediate need is obviously shelter, along with that comes the necessity for food,” said Slusher. “Last night they had about 15 (people). Some of the power's getting turned back on so some people are venturing home, but the population normally doubles around breakfast, lunch, and dinner time."
It was those same straight line winds that knocked down walls to the Dollar General Distribution Center, that looked to be up and running Wednesday.
However, the worst damage in Marion was appeared to be in Summit Village Mobile Home Community, and luckily no one was hurt.
The winds were so fierce there a mobile home was flipped on top of another while families were inside.
"We have approximately 85 houses here, and I would say about 50 of them had some type of damage—whether it be roofs, siding, that sort of thing—a lot of storm doors blown off,” said Hartley.
Hartley says insurance companies have been out everyday since the storm. His goal is to get every home repaired, and replaced, before the winter weather arrives.
"People who live here are coming out and helping, picking things up, you know, just chipping in and helping out in any way they can. We got a great group of people here, and we're going to turn around and everything's going to be fine,” he said.
Indiana Michigan Power predicts power will be restored by Thursday afternoon.
