NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- A recent weekday morning and residents of North Manchester’s Peabody Retirement Center are gathering in the chapel for something special. This is Donna Brown, who at age 80-something is older than many of the folks who’ve come to hear her this morning.

Donna brown grew up in a musical household; she’s played various instruments all her life and now travels to local nursing homes, retirement centers and hospitals, bringing her music to folks who really appreciate it.

“My brother Glenn played the trombone,” she says. “My brother Lloyd played the drums. My husband and I sang duets at every funeral for I don’t know how many years.

For years Donna traveled as a duet with her husband Doyle. He died in March and Donna has been performing solo since, carrying her own brand of humor with her to every performance.

“I told them last year I was going to bring a lady with a bikini,” she says, “and so I told them the only way that they would see me in a bikini was with a towel in front and a towel behind.”

“She really gets involved in what she does,” says Peabody official Martha Walther, “and you can tell she cares not only about the residents but helping to build the community’s enthusiasm as well.”

She isn’t paid much for her performances, barely covers gas money. But Donna Brown says seeing smiling faces and tapping toes…seeing the joy her music brings her audiences ..Is better than money.

“How much longer you gonna do this?” we ask. “Well, until I die I guess.”
