MARKLE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Saturday at the Markle Park, the eigth annual Ride 2 Provide will benefit two local children, one who is battling Beals Syndrome, a rare and incurable connective tissue disorder, and the other who was born 23 weeks premature.
Kendall Layne Ormsby is a 19-month-old from Uniondale. She has Beals Syndrome, also known as the dinosaur syndrome, and has had surgeries to repair foot and elbow deformities since birth. When she was born her feet were lying on her shins, she had rocker bottom foot and both her elbows were dislocated. Her fingers and toes are extremely long and were clutched like fits and hard to open when she was born. At just a month old she began therapy that will be a part of her life forever.
She may soon need knee replacement surgery and she just had her second elbow surgery. Her heart and kidney must be monitored annually for damage and her spine has to be watched closely for scoliosis or kyphosis. She has a brother, Bryar, who was born in November and also has Beals. A geneticist at Riley Hospital told the family that Kendall is only the 2nd patient with Beals that he has seen in his 40-year career.
Cayden James Hoffmaster was born a micro preemie, born at 23 weeks gestation. He weighed just 1 lb. 1 oz. at birth. There were no complications with the pregnancy and it is unknown what caused the premature arrival. When Cayden entered the world he was fighting to survive and spent his first 281 days of life in the hospital.
He has undergone 9 major surgeries and he has a G-Tube, VA Shunt and Tracheostomy to regulate issues. He also is on oxygen support daily and sleeps on a ventilator at night. At 12 months old, Cayden has also been diagnosed with severe developmental delay caused by extreme prematurity and long hospitalization. He is also at very high risk of developing Cerebral Palsy.
