FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is reassuring residents that the city is safe.

His words, despite 12 homicides so far this year, including five in the past week alone.

Both Mayor Henry and Police Chief Rusty York credited the public's quick 911 calls and details to police that helped them solve two of the most recent homicides.

Mayor Henry says the city is safe, and reassured residents they don't need to be afraid, despite the recent rash of violence.

While not offering a specific solution, Henry affirmed his trust in Police Chief Rusty York and his command staff, saying they were doing a great job dealing with the city's recent shootings.

Henry said this year's homicides were all targeted, not random, and linked to three things: drugs, gangs and domestic violence. And he called residents the eyes and ears of the city, which could help police solve cases.

"If you see something, you know something, you hear something, you suspect something, by all means, let the police department know. That's how these crimes are being solved," said Mayor Henry.

"The last 48 hours have been extremely trying. But with the help of the community, we were able to basically resolve two very dangerous, heinous murders," added Chief York.

People were quick to tell police what they saw during the fatal shootings Tuesday at Rudisill and Indiana and Wednesday at Pettit and Reed. Police say that cooperation was crucial to helping them crack those cases.
