FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Indiana's Newscenter has learned the plan to keep kids safe after a recent shooting outside a Metro Youth Sports football game will cost $15,000 dollars.
"I may have to charge to make sure we can pay for that security," said Metro Youth Sports President Jim Winters.
"It's not in our budget but we didn't know we were going to have a shooting here in Fort Wayne. So we have to rise to the occasion to have security for our children. But we'll get it taken care of," said Winters.
The plan which has already been implemented, calls for three off-duty Fort Wayne Police Officers to work as security at all Metro Youth Sports football games until the end of the season in late October.
The league security consultant said all three officers will be paid $25 dollars an hour.
The uniformed off-duty officers will work 10.5 hour shifts on Saturdays and 5.5 hour shifts on Sundays.
Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York attended Wednesday afternoon's meeting.
York told Indiana's NewsCenter that his biggest concern was public safety, so he is scheduling on-duty officers to periodically patrol near Metro Youth Football games.
Meanwhile, Wednesday's meeting closed door meeting because emotional over safety and educational concerns.
"We also thought it was important to for some kids that might need to offer mental health services if they were distraught by anything that had occurred but at no time was there any thought of canceling the program or getting in the way of a program that serves so many kids effectively," said Fort Wayne Urban League President & CEO Jonathan Ray.
Metro Youth Sports will hold an informational meeting for parents on Monday, August 30 at 5 p.m. at the Greatest Progressive Baptist Church at 2215 John Street in Fort Wayne.
Metro leaders will share what security measures are in place and also clear up any misinformation about the recent shooting that took place on Sunday, August 15 at the Memorial Park Middle School's football field.
