FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- The minor flooding in Fort Wayne now could grow much worse. Melting snow mixed with heavy rains expected tonight and through the weekend, will likely send the already rising rivers spilling over onto roadways and into some homes.
Along Tillman Road there already is some minor flooding caused by the St. Marys River. City leaders say they expect the St. Marys to crest, late Thursday night.
Earlier Thursday evening city crews dumped clay along the area to help control the flooding.
Sandbags are also popping up in the more notorious locations for flooding. City leaders are keeping a close eye on the forecast and are especially monitoring the Junk Ditch.
Frank Suarez, Public Information Officer for the City of Fort Wayne says, “It's a flat area and certainly when the water comes up, there's usually no place for it to go. if you think about a table top, if you pour water on it, it's just going to spread out. So certainly I'm sure the residents there are concerned. Additionally we have pumps that we've placed around town. We're just trying to make sure we're ready in case we do need to do something “
City crews have already set up three pumps and have several others are on stand-by.
