FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Neglect and public intoxication charges against a Fort Wayne mother accused of leaving five children home alone with rat poison and a hot iron are dropped.
The 72 hour holding period has passed to file formal charges against 28-year-old Amber Tinsley, but officials say the investigation is still ongoing.
A tripped burglar alarm summoned police to Tinsley's home on Hamilton Avenue early Sunday morning.
They found five children alone in what officials describe as filthy conditions, with rat poison, an iron turned on high heat, and alcohol all within the children's reach.
The children ranged in age from three to nine years old. Four of the children were Tinsley's. One child said Tinsley had been gone for 2-hours.
She returned almost an hour after police arrived, and told police she was out back having a cigarette the whole time. She was arrested for public intoxication and multiple felony counts of neglect of a dependent.
The children were placed with relatives by the Department of Child Services.
