DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- Two people were flown to Parkview Hospital with head and face injuries after they collided with a railroad crossing arm at CR 42 and CR 59 in DeKalb County.

Michael Powell, 56, was driving a 2007 Harley Davidson headed southbound on CR 59 and approaching the railroad crossing south of CR 42 Sunday around 5:30 p.m. Powell told police he did not see the crossing arms, which were already down, because the sun was in his eyes.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, when Powell saw the crossing arms, he applied the brakes, but the bike slid through the intersection and struck the southbound crossing arm with the front of the motorcycle.

Connie Cossairt, 59, was a passenger on the motorcycle. Both she and Powell suffered head and face injuries and were flown, via Samaritan Helicopter, to the hospital.

Police say neither were wearing a helmet.
