FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - The number of meth labs reported in Allen County for 2013 is at an all-time high. According to law enforcement, 32 were reported in 2012, while 64 were reported in 2013.

Even more alarming numbers, of the 92 counties in Indiana, Allen County ranks 4th for the most number of reported meth labs.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health created a report with this local data and according to those statistics, methamphetamine, or meth, use is most common among those 26 and older.

The department says that a meth lab can operate virtually anywhere. Increasingly, makeshift labs are being found inside of homes.

For each pound of meth produced, five to six pounds of hazardous waste are created. Officials say that the poisonous vapors go into the insulation, carpets, and curtains. This often makes the homes and buildings unlivable for years to come.

"The residual of the chemicals left behind in the home or the areas where they make them, oftentimes where kids are present, are volatile. When people breathe those in, they have respiratory issues, throat and nose issues, as well as nausea and vomiting. Some of the chemicals cause cancer," says Mindy Waldron with the Allen County Health Department.

If you suspect this activity, Indiana State Police has a meth hotline, where tips can be made anonymously.
