FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - As the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks draws near, several local agencies are partnering to honor those who lost their lives.
On Sunday, September 11, the Fort Wayne Fire Department and 14 other sponsors are inviting community members to participate in a 9/11 Stair Climb and Public Safety Day at Parkview Field.
The climb will include walking up and down the stairs of Parkview Field with the goal of using physical activity to remember the impact September 11th had on lives across the country.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:00 a.m. and the climb will begin at 8:46 a.m. The timing corresponds to the moment the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower.
Pre-registration for the event is limited to 403 people. This number also has special meaning. It's the number of firefighters and police officers who died in the attacks. In exchange for a $10 registration fee, all pre-registered participants will be given a t-shirt. All money raised will go to the Fort Wayne Fire and Police Departments' Fallen Hero Fund.
If you aren't able to pre-register, bring the entire family to Parkview Field for the day's other events. At 9:00 a.m. public safety officials from the Allen County community will begin holding demonstrations and providing safety education. At noon, a stair climb open to the whole community will also take place. No registration is needed.
People can also take part in the 9/11 Throw Down Fitness Challenge. The program is used by safety departments nation-wide and incorporates numbers and moves relating to the New York attacks.
In addition, you can be a "Tourist in Your Hometown" this September 11th. Visit Fort Wayne is providing the public with free admission to many downtown museums and attractions.
