FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The group pushing to return passenger rail service to Fort Wayne will lobby the state legislature for funding.
The "Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association" wants the state to set aside two-percent of its transportation budget to help fund high-speed rail projects.
That would amount to $35 million a year.
This comes as the federal government is shifting nearly $365,000 in matching funds to Indiana to develop high-speed rail service now that Ohio and Wisconsin are abandoning their plans.
Geoff Paddock with the NE Indiana Rail Association says, “We urge Governor Daniels, we urge the Department of Transportation to vigorously and aggressively apply for that funding so we can catch up and actually got some rail development over the next few years."
Paddock says if Indiana can get some of that money, he wants the state to use it to move the Amtrak line to Chicago from Waterloo back to Fort Wayne.
