Pets Take Part in Halloween Festivities

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Pet costumes are flying off the shelves at one local pet store as many look to include their pet in on Halloween.

An employee at the Petco on Coliseum says often times pet owners will try different outfits on their pets in the store, and that's something the workers at Petco advise. That way owners can make sure their pet is the type of pet who is okay with wearing a costume.

Tracey Hopson works at the store, and is also a dog trainer. He says, while some may think it's unfair to the dogs, every dog is different and most are happy to wear the costume. He says it's a way families can include their pets in on trick or treating, and other events around the holiday.

"If people like it, and the dog is not fighting the costume then we know it's okay for them. So it's not a bad thing," said Tracey Hopson, store advisor, Petco.

The executive director of the Allen County SPCA agrees dressing pets is appropriate as long as the pet appears to be happy.

But the SPCA wants to remind pet owners to be careful their pets are not overwhelmed during the Halloween season.

Trick-or-treating is not for every dog. Some dogs don't mind it but others may get scared, and stressed out by all the new activity.

"The animal can hurt his or herself, can harm furniture or tear things up if they're trying to really exert their energy, or to exhibit stress," said Jessica Henry, Executive Director, Allen County SPCA.

If your pet does appear stressed Henry suggests keeping them in another room while trick-or-treaters come and go, and if they bark constantly at certain Halloween decorations she suggests removing them.
