FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Michael Plumadore will spend the rest of his days in prison. Monday Plumadore was sentenced to life behind bars without the chance of parole. It was a plea deal he agreed to. Plumadore confessed to the brutal murder of 9-year-old Aliahna Lemmon.

His defense lawyers say this was the best solution, and say Michael Plumadore has accepted his fate.

"Mr. Plumadore is very at peace with this decision. Even yesterday after the sentence was imposed he realized that he was never going to see freedom again and he understands that and he accepted that," said Tony Churchward, Plumadore's Defense Attorney.

This is the outcome Aliahna Lemmon's family wanted and something the county prosecutor was happy with. Still some people in the community wanted to see the death penalty...

"You don't harm children, you just don't. It doesn't matter if he murdered her or molested her, he shouldn't have the opportunity to breathe anymore," said Lindsey Brown, Wings of Innocence.

One of Plumadore’s defense lawyers, Mark Thoma, says he understands why some wanted to see a stricter penalty, but he thinks the punishment fits the crime.

"Take solace in the fact that Michael Plumadore got the death penalty. It's just being imposed in a different way. He got death by prison not death by a lethal injection," said Mark Thoma, Plumadore's Defense Attorney.

Despite the outcome and despite the client Thoma says their job is about upholding the county's justice system. He says in this case he thinks their job was done.

"This brought closure and certainty to the community as to what would happen to Michael Plumadore," said Thoma.

Reaching a plea deal stopped this case from going to trial and meant Plumadore wouldn't face the death penalty.
