BRYANT, Ind. (RTV6) - Indiana State Police and the Board of Animal Health are investigating allegations of animal neglect involving horses in Jay County.
Call 6 Investigator Kara Kenney obtained a copy of a court order that was issued Nov. 10 for horses at 650 W. 650 N in Bryant, Ind.
According to police, one horse was in such poor condition it had to be euthanized and was taken to Purdue University for a necropsy.
Four other horses found in poor condition were also removed and taken to Shadarobah Horse Rescue in Allen County.
A dozen horses still remain on the property, police said.
Jay County Prosecutor Wesley Schemenaur told Kenney his office is waiting to receive the final report from Indiana State Police before proceeding.
"We have been working with state police and the trooper doing the investigation," said Schemenaur. "Once we receive the report we’ll make a determination on charges."
Kenney was unable to reach the owner of the horses, Karen Barron, for comment.
The Indiana State Board of Animal Health was on site Nov. 8 and used a body condition scoring system to evaluate the horses.
"How the animals scored is part of the report, which I’m not authorized to release," said Denise Derrer, public information director for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. "Our veterinarian’s report is not yet complete. When it is, it will be up to the prosecutor to decide if that report should be released."
Derrer said they evaluated 17 horses on the premises, and that 12 currently remain on site.
Jay County Humane Society president Julia Ashman said the organization has been investigating the property since 2007, and they're very concerned about the health of the animals still there.
"These horses are very, very skinny," Ashman said. "You can almost grab their rib bones. It's very sad."
Ashman said they are hoping to get a court order to remove the rest of the animals on the property before it's too late.
"I'm very concerned for the horses," she said. "No animal or God's creature should ever be left to die in this kind of condition."
