FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) - A man who Fort Wayne Police say had several active warrants for his arrest died Wednesday evening following a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

The man was identified as Jermaine Lamar Walker, 40, of Fort Wayne.

The incident began when police responded to the Southgate Shopping Plaza around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday looking for the suspect. Officers set up surveillance in the area and spotted the man minutes later.

As officers approached the suspect’s car he sped off. He stopped to let a passenger out before, again, speeding off eventually leading police down Airport Expressway.

That's where officers deployed a tire deflation device which blew out two of the suspect's tires. He continued south on Airport Expressway but veered left of the center line into the path of a construction vehicle.
The driver says he tried to miss the suspect's vehicle, but the two ended up colliding, leaving the suspect pinned inside his vehicle.

Fire crews had to extricate the man who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.
