ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Allen County courts, probation and sheriff's officials are creating a program to reduce prison overpopulation.

"ACCEPT" or 'Allen County Continuous Evaluation Probation Tract' is expected to provide alternative punishments for technical violations of probation. Like missed appointments and failed drug tests.

Instead of sending these violators directly to jail they could serve more probation or take more drug screenings.

Allen County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Scheibenberger says, “The goal of the program is to reduce those people sitting in the Allen County Jail on probation violations as well as reduce the amount of people that we in Allen County send to the Department of Corrections based on their violation of probation.”

The program comes at no cost to the county and begins September first.
