NBC (Indiana's NewsCenter) - The nation is pausing to reflect and to remember those lost in the September 11 terrorist attacks 10 years ago.
In the 10 years since 9/11, ceremonies have marked the moments when America came under attack and at the same time, paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 who died.
As the nation pauses to remember on this 10th anniversary, those familiar rituals are giving way to dramatic change. In New York City, a newly completed 9/11 Memorial is being dedicated.
"It's sacred ground not only for families, really, for the entire country," Joe Daniels says, President of the National September 11th Memorial.
For the first time, families have a permanent place to grieve and reflect. Two memorial pools sit where the twin towers once stood. Surrounding the waterfalls are the names of victims inscribed in bronze.
"For families the experience will be different. For so many that didn't get any human remains back to bury. So when they come here and that first experience, the first time that they place their hand, touch their hand on their loved ones names," Daniels said.
In Shanksville, Pennsylvania Flight 93 families, who over the years have made the journey to the desolate field where the plane crashed, are holding services at a new permanent national memorial dedicated on Saturday.
Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and Vice President Joe Biden, highlighted the heroic efforts of the 40 passengers and crew members who died while fighting the hijackers.
President George W. Bush said, "What happened above this Pennsylvania field ranks as one of the most courageous acts in American history,"
President Bush also traveled to the Pentagon for a ceremony Saturday, placing a wreath at the 9/11 Memorial Stone to honor the 184 people killed.
Sunday morning he joined President Obama at the World Trade Center site in New York City, both leaders showing solidarity and offering solace 10 years later.
Following today's ceremonies throughout the city another tradition takes place tonight, the Tribute in Light, twin beams lighting up the night sky symbolizing where the twin towers once stood.
