ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - He was a surprise winner in Fort Wayne's May 3rd Primary, but now Tommy Schrader has been ruled ineligible to run for a city council seat in November.
The decision Friday by the Allen County Election Board comes after new evidence surfaced that Schrader voted in another city in the primary.
The candidate's own words led to a unanimous decision by the board that Schrader did not meet residency requirements to legally run for office.
Schrader volunteered at the election board meeting that he had registered to vote and did vote earlier this month in the Green Bay, Wisconsin mayoral race, where he had been staying for around 90 days leading up to the primary.
Board members also said it gave them concern when Schrader admitted he didn’t return to Fort Wayne until his mother called post-election to let him know someone filed a challenge to his candidacy.
Following the move to scratch Schrader from the ballot, he was defiant, and one of the board members said he voiced threats.
Tommy Schrader/Removed From November Ballot: " I think they're biased against me. I won the election. I'm going to appeal."
Zachary Klutz/:(R) Allen County Election Board: " I'm sitting at the table and I hear him say, I know where you live and how much were you paid off? That is disconcerting and a little frightening. That did not go to our decision by any means, in terms of, is this person a resident or eligible to be a candidate."
Schrader had no real explanation as to why he voted in the Green Bay election.
Local democrat Kevin Knuth filed a challenge with the election board, seeking to have Schrader’s name removed from the ballot.
Schrader currently is residing at a Travel Inn Hotel on Coliseum Boulevard.
He has made several unsuccessful bids at elected offices in Allen County over the past dozen years or so.
He has 30 days to file a formal appeal with Allen Circuit Court, if he wants to challenge the election board ruling.
If he eventually loses, the Allen County Democratic Party Chairman will pick Schrader's replacement on the ballot.
