UNITED STATES (21Alive) -- A U.S. Senator is speaking out against allowing China to sell chickens slaughtered in China to the U.S. until Chinese factories get cleaner, inspections become more rigid and American consumers are fully informed of what they are buying.
According to New York Daily News, starting in the summer of 2014, chickens raised in the U.S. can be sent to China for processing and then sold back to American consumers.
Senator Charles Schumer cited China's poor food and safety track record when he said Sunday that "the United States Department of Agriculture is taking steps away from guaranteeing American consumers a safe food supply."
Schumer alleged that the proposal has nothing to do with health and safety and that is was all about diplomacy, but the USDA denied Schumer's allegations.
