FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – What steps do you take in protecting your identity? With identity theft on the rise something as small as shredding personal documents becomes so important in protecting yourself and your finances.

That’s why the Indiana State Police, the U.S. Postal Inspectors, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and Afdent joined forces for "Shred It Day."

Saturday morning a mobile shredder was set up in the parking lot of Afdent Dental Services on Parnell Avenue. People were encouraged to bring any unwanted papers, credit cards, or other such materials that contain personal information to be destroyed free of charge.

“You have dumpster divers that get people's personal confidential information and try to steal their identity, steal their money. If you can get it shredded then it's much safer and this was confidential shredding so that's the best way to do I, said Greg Smitley with the BBB.

Smitley says the BBB plans to hold another shred day in October.
