Fort Wayne, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Two shootings in Fort Wayne Thursday night in a matter of just a few hours.
The first shooting happened at 6:50 p.m. at 3717 Bowser Avenue. Police were called to the scene where they found Dwayne E. Russell, a male, black 20 years of age, dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators say that the victim was shot while standing outside waiting for a ride when he was fired upon. Russell is the 12th homicide victim in Allen County in 2012.
However, Indiana’s NewsCenter spoke with a witness who says they were sitting on their front porch when the shooting happened. The witness says they heard about five or six gunshots and saw two men jump over a back porch and run down their street. They described the suspects as two black males wearing white t-shirts. The witness says the neighborhood is notorious for violence, and believes drug dealing might be involved.
“There’s a lot of drug activity through here. Especially those two houses where you can see people come out, deliver it to them and exchange the money,” the witness said.
The second shooting happened at 9:21 p.m. Police were called out to the 1502 of Gardendale Avenue, just off of Decatur Road.
Allen County Coroner's Office say the 23 year old male victim has been positively identified but identity will be held pending notification of the next of kin. This is the 13th homicide in Allen County in 2012.
Police say they do not think this shooting is related to the shooting on Bowser Avenue, but bystanders told Indiana’s NewsCenter that the victim is possibly the cousin of the other victim. The bystanders also led on that it was the result of a possible set-up and home invasion. Fort Wayne Police were not able to confirm that information.
Police did confirm that the victim was shot while fleeing from another individual.
If anyone has any information regarding these shootings please call the Fort Wayne Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 436-STOP.
