FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – There's no better time to let your mother know how special she is...and why not do it with a flower that helps keep Fort Wayne’s Botanical Conservatory up and running?
“Mothers that really embody that name, are ones who nurture and help us to grow,” said Rebecca Canales, Program Supervisor at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne. “And there’s something about the beauty of a plant and the way it grows that just excites people, the miracle of life. So it’s a wonderful tie-in for Mother’s Day: the miracle of life, nurturing and bringing beauty into the world.”
People lined up Sunday afternoon, awaiting the Botanical Conservatory's annual Mother's Day Plant Sale at the old McMillen Ice Arena.
For Kari Smith and her family, it's a Mother’s Day tradition.
“It’s always been a favorite tradition of mine going here for five years for Mother’s Day,” said Smith’s daughter Cassandra, 6. “I like looking at all the pretty flowers.”
“It’s for St. Francis,” said Smith’s other daughter, Mady, 3, referring to the statue of St. Francis in the Smith family garden.
“We always allow the girls to choose their own flowers, decorate their own pots and they, of course, help mom pick out flowers for her pots,” said Smith. “It just gives us a time to focus on the simple things in life.”
“When we look out our breakfast window, we’ll see something beautiful,” Cassandra added.
Not only it is a special time for families to bond, it's the conservatory's one and only fundraiser.
“Anyone who supports us in the sales is actually supporting keeping the Botanical Conservatory lively, bringing programs, inviting people, and helping to bring businesses and visitors to Fort Wayne,” said Canales.
Canales says there are over 750 different plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs to choose from. This year, Canales says she expects between 2,500 and 3,000 shoppers—and many happy mothers.
