FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- The U.S. Attorney General visited Ferguson, Missouri Wednesday, as groups continue to rally against what they call an unjust shooting.

But some wonder whether a body camera would have eliminated the protests altogether.

At the heart of the issue is whether a Ferguson police officer shot an unarmed 18-year old, who witnesses say had his hands in the air.

But if the officer had been wearing a "body camera," the device might have captured what really happened.

While Indiana State Police are not issued body cameras, some buy their own for several hundred dollars to wear on duty to document traffic stops and criminal investigations.

"It also actually benefits them in the event somebody comes forth with a complaint. because you can go back to that video and either prove or disprove that something that was alleged to have happened actually did," says Sgt. Ron Galaviz of the Indiana State Police.

Galaviz says the recordings are used to investigate complaints and review cases, and are admissable in court.

He also says the police have a protocol for downloading and storing the digital video.

"This is just very simply taking the technology out of the police car, minimizing it, and putting it on the person of the individual trooper. so that he or she can go out and still do the same job, but still record and document," Galaviz says.

A tiny piece of equipment that could have been a powerful tool in understanding what really happened in Ferguson.
