STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (21Alive) -- A meeting to sort out a dispute over management of 911 communications in Steuben County drew a standing-room-only crowd that was overflowing.
Law enforcement officers and private citizens crammed into a community center meeting room after Sheriff Tim Troyer went public last week about staffing issues at the county dispatch center.
Troyer wants to take control of running the center from the Commissioners, saying working conditions and staff turnover have placed public safety at risk. Commissioners acknowledged the huge turnout, but took no comments from the public, saying the criticisms are overblown.
"As I was there, one young lady, a trainee, was there, doing a maginificent job, right on the job, so in other words, as you heard me say, I do not feel at risk," Ron Smith, (R) Steuben County Commissioner said.
"I am a little disappointed that they didn't listen to the people, I think that as an elected official, that is one of the first and foremost duties, is listening to the people that you serve," Sheriff Tim Troyer said.
The Commissioners did not make a decision about management of the office, saying that they will take the situation under advisement and rule later.
