FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A matter of minutes is all it took to leave parts of Fort Wayne looking like a war zone Friday. And the damage has people throughout the area cleaning up and looking for places to stay cool Saturday.
"The doors were shaking, the windows were shaking in," said Vicki Hunt, witnessed the storm.
"It just all of a sudden came down the street," said Andrew Henry, witnessed the storm.
90 mph winds were reported and funnel clouds were spotted. It's one of the worst storms to hit the City of Fort Wayne.
"The sky was real dark and just kinda swirling," said Henry.
"It came so fast, all of a sudden all you heard was a swoosh, and next thing you know the tree fell, we saw the tree coming, we heard a big crash, which obviously was my car," said Hunt.
Her car was hit by a tree smashing the back window and crushing the top of the car. There are also down power lines still hanging in the middle of streets Saturday along with massive trees the storm pulled down. Some homes even have trees right on top of them.
Vicky lives on Rivermet Avenue but this is the scene throughout many of the city's neighborhoods. Despite the damage, Vicky says it has been amazing to see the community come together.
"After the storm everybody came out, and kinda just helped each other. I've never seen some of these neighbors before and it was really cool,” said Hunt.
Thousands are still without power and cleaning up debris Saturday. Vicky says it will take some time to get things back to normal.
"It's getting with my insurance, to get this figured out, which they said between Monday and Friday, getting with AEP trying to figure out when we are going to get power, My job doesn't have any power, probably, maybe till Wednesday,” said Hunt.
While she waits for answers Vicky says she’s thankful for her family and friends who have been helping her with places to stay until she can be back inside her home again. AEP is estimating to have most of the power restored by Wednesday night.
