FORT WAYNE, IN (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Republican 3rd District Congressional Candidate Marlin Stutzman says his opponent's newest political ad steps outside the bounds of fairness.
Among his chief gripes, that the ad from Democrat Tom Hayhurst takes shots at not only Stutzman, but also his family.
It starts with Stutzman saying he thinks it's time to put an end to agriculture subsidies, then a narrator goes on to say the Stutzman family has received nearly $1-million in taxpayer farm subsidies.
Stutzman claims, by law, farmers have to accept the subsidies at issue in the ad.
He says voters are getting misinformation in the spot, and the Stutzman family is wrongly getting a black eye.
Marlin Stutzman/(R) 3rd District Congressional Candidate: " I don't think there's any place in politics to be bringing people's families in, he's doing that so that he can exaggerate the numbers. His ads are full of half-truths, whether it's on the agriculture subsidy, whether it's on the unemployment insurance vote, and I'm asking him to take the ad down."
Stutzman takes issue with another point in the ad, arguing that while serving in the Indiana Legislature, Stutzman voted for a 78% pay hike for state lawmakers.
Stutzman says what the ad doesn’t say, is that lifetime insurance benefits and a taxpayer funded pension match were eliminated in the pay hike vote.
The Hayhurst camp makes no apologies for the commercial, including the remarks about the Stutzman family.
Hayhurst maintains because Marlin Stutzman is a part-owner of the land in question, it’s fair game.
He says it illustrates that Stutzman can say one thing and do another.
Stutzman is also criticizing Hayhurst in a new ad generated by the republican.
It claims that Hayhurst supports the death tax, which will cost every Hoosier family.
A spokesperson for Hayhurst says he has not taken a public position on the inheritance tax, and as a result, it's hypocritical of Stutzman to complain that he's the victim of half-truths, when he's doing the same to Hayhurst.
