Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Sweetwater Sound announced Friday morning that it will be making a huge expansion in Allen County.
They opened a new facility about 6 years ago off U.S. 30 in Fort Wayne. They are now adding 110,000 square feet to that complex. Over the next 4 years they will add 316 jobs. Right now they have about 400 employees so the added positions will almost double their workforce.
"We are very fortunate to be in a business that's growing and not going backwards," said Chuck Surack, Sweetwater Sound.
The new jobs will vary from their sales department to stocking the warehouse.
"We sell equipment all over the country, all over the world and by having more people on the phones we can talk to more customers," said Surack.
So why Fort Wayne? The company is the third largest music instrument and audio retailer in the United States and although it's based in the Summit City their products are shipped all over.
"There is a lot of tugging and pulling, there are some advantages to opening a warehouse, whether it’s on the west coast to distribute a little bit easier to our customers or to have a facility in Nashville or even Southern California where a lot of musicians and creative artists are. However, Fort Wayne is my home and we already have a great foundation here," said Surack.
Sweetwater’s last big expansion occurred in November of 2006, when they moved into its new location, off of U.S. 30. This also grew their employment from 240 to 413 employees.
The latest expansion will include 35,000 square feet of additional warehouse space, with the remaining 75,000 square feet devoted to marketing and sales staff, plus additional conference and training space.
Sweetwater Sound plans to invest at least $23.6 million.
