FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – All the presents have been unwrapped and the family is enjoying all their new gifts. But what about the wrapping paper, boxes, and all the old junk you're throwing out? It's not too difficult to believe this time of year brings more trash to the city landfill than at any other point in the year.

Republic Services reports they are seeing a 25 percent increase in the amount of incoming trash during the holidays. Between that and the poor road conditions from Wednesday’s storm, truck drivers are running a little behind schedule.

Ryan Borchers, the Operations Supervisor at Republic Services advises residents to "make sure you have your garbage out the night before. Be patient. We ask for your patience as far as getting there due to the weather and the increased amount of trash. We're more worried about everyone being safe - our drivers here as well as the general public on the roads. So we've urged our guys to slow down, make sure everybody's safe."

Republic Services also recommends bagging or properly bundling any excess trash that does not fit into your bin. And of course don't forget to recycle when appropriate.

Don’t forget, those big garbage trucks struggle on icy roads just like any other vehicle. So between delays from the snow fall as well as drivers lowering speeds on the roads, pick-ups over the past few days are running a few hours behind schedule.

No worries, though, they expect everything to be back to normal by the end of the week.
