Monroeville, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Generations of Monroeville residents made the trip to the Monroeville Elementary School today for the final time as the school hosted a farewell open house.

Monroeville Elementary is one of a handful of elementary schools in the East Allen County Schools that will be shutdown as part of its redesign. During spring, students were given options as to which elementary school they would like attend in the fall. Most students and teachers are headed to Hoagland Elementary.

Cletus and Dorothy Heimann taught for a combined 40 years at Monroeville. Dorothy calls the school the life of the community.

“I'm very sad because of the fact that we're losing our school in Monroeville. I feel like the school is the life of the community."

Cletus says students will be given other opportunities to learn and urges them to hit the books. He too though can’t help but reminisce about his time as a teacher.

“I enjoyed my years at Monroeville, have fond memories of Mr. Martin the principal and my many students."

It is a sentiment shared by Monroeville Elementary’s principal Nicole Singer. She too has a lot of history in Monroeville.

“My parents both attended the Monroeville High School. My grandmother taught here. So it's really bittersweet for me. I enjoy the community. It will always be home to me."

Students in the K-6 building have just one week of school left.
