UNDATED (www.incnow.tv) - With such an unspeakable tragedy, how do parents talk to their children about the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting?
The American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement saying young children should not be exposed to extensive coverage; but they also say that parents should talk about the shooting with their children. If they don't hear it from you chances are they'll hear about it from someone else.
The experts suggest asking your child what they know. Then express to them that shootings are rare and reassure them everyday that we'll keep one another safe. Keep the lines of communications open and acknowledge that events like the one in Newtown are both scary and sad.
There are positive things that can help them feel better like playing with a friend or getting a hug.
Those are just a few steps that can help.
