Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - A break-in went awry for two men near downtown Fort Wayne.

Police say the two forced their way into a house in the 800 block of Home Avenue around 8:45 Thursday night. But whatever motivated their decision, the incident apparently did not go as planned.

Officials say someone in the home shot the men. They then fled the scene and ended up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. One of the men was last said to be in critical condition. Police have not yet released the other victim's condition. Their names have also not been released.

Officer Liza Thomas with the Fort Wayne Police Department says, “The occupants of the home, we believe, on our preliminary reports, fired a shot at one or both of the perpetrators, and it spooked them enough where they fled and left on foot."

Multiple people, including children, were in the home at the time of the shooting. None of them was injured.

There have been no arrests or charges filed as the investigation into the case continues.
